Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
